3rd Ecological Congress
 One of the mandates of the Biodiversity Board is to create awareness on the need for conserving biodiversity among different sections of the society, including students and teachers of the schools and colleges, secretariat staff, bureaucrats, legislatives, judiciary, media and general public. Biodiversity Board is involving educational institutions actively in various programmes related to biodiversity conservation.  The theme for the Third Children’s Ecological Congress would be “Biodiversity is life… Biodiversity is our life”, which is also the theme proposed for International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) 2010. Competitions State level competitions will be held on the following items.
 Water Colour Painting
 Essay Writing
 Quiz
 Oral Presentation (Based on the activities of the school carried out on Biodiversity Conservation during the last / current academic year).
Competitions on the above themes shall be conducted at school level, and those who secure First place in each item alone shall be eligible for participating at the State level competition. Duly filled up entry forms attached shall reach on or before 20 November 2010. The State level competitions will be held at Museum Auditorium, Museum Compound, Thiruvananthapuram on 29 and 30 November 2010. The school which scores maximum points will get the Rolling Trophy for the year 2010. Applications are invited from eligible schools

പൂമ്പാറ്റകള്‍ക്കായി ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഒരുക്കിയ ഉദ്യാനത്തില്‍ കൂട്ടം കൂട്ടമായി പല ജാതി ശലഭങ്ങള്‍ മധു നുകര്‍ന്ന് സായൂജ്യമടയാന്‍ എത്തി തുടങ്ങി. പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തിലെ വ്യതസ്ത ശലഭങ്ങളെ ഇങ്ങോട്ടു ആകര്‍ഷിക്കുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യമാണ്‌ ഞങ്ങളെ ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ ഒരു സംരംഭത്തിന് പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചത്. വനം എന്ന് പറയുന്നത് ഗവണ്മെന്റ് സംരിക്ഷിത പ്രദേശതു മാത്രമുള്ളതല്ലെന്നും അതിലെ ജീവികള്‍ക്ക്  പരിസര പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലും സംരക്ഷണം ആവശ്യമുണ്ടെന്നും ഏവ നമ്മെ ഓര്‍മിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.  
ഞങ്ങള്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ചിത്രശലബങ്ങളുടെ രജിസ്റ്റര്‍ ഉടനെ ബ്ലോഗില്‍ പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കുന്നതാണ്.

KSCSTE institutes awards for eco clubs

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 42 schools across the State will compete for the district and State-level awards instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) for the best eco clubs under the National Green Corps programme.

The 42 schools, three from each district, were shortlisted by the District Implementation and Monitoring Committee (DIMC) chaired by the District Collector. The schools will be invited to make a presentation on their activities at a workshop to be held at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) here on August 5 and 6. An evaluation committee has been set up for the purpose.

The best eco club in each district will get a cash prize of Rs.50,000, while the State-level award carries a purse of Rs.1 lakh. Each school participating in the competition will have two students and one teacher.

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom is expected to distribute the awards at the workshop. The National Green Corps is an environment education programme launched by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

In Kerala, as many as 2,00,000 students from 3,460 schools are members of eco clubs. Each eco club consists of more than 50 students and a teacher in-charge.

The KSCSTE provides an assistance of Rs.2,500 for each school.

Call to conserve natural resources

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) executive vice-president C.T.S. Nair has urged students to adopt corrective measures to prevent exploitation of natural resources.

He was inaugurating a State-level workshop for selection of best National Green Corps (NGC) school at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) here on Thursday.

R.V.G. Menon presided over the inaugural session. CESS director-in-charge T. Radhakrishnan, National Green Corps Thiruvananthapuram district coordinator K.G. Ajit Kumar, State Nodal Officer, National Green Corps, Kamalakshan Kokkal and KSCSTE scientific officer P. Harinarayanan spoke.

As many as 150 participants, including teachers, students and NGC district coordinators, from select schools in 14 districts in the State are taking part in the two-day workshop. The district-level and State-level winners for the premier prizes instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment will be decided in the workshop. The awards will be declared at the valedictory session to be held on Friday.

School gets award for best eco-club

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ramakrishna Mission School, Kozhikode, has won the award instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment for the best performing eco-club in the State. The award was presented at a two-day State-level workshop on National Green Corps which concluded here on Friday. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh and a certificate.

The activities were taken up by students in the 2009-10 academic year.

The district-level awards carrying a purse of Rs.50,000 each went to Government UPS, Ayilam, Thiruvananthapuram, Jawahar Navodaya, Kottarakkara , Kollam, St. Joseph's HSS for Girls, Alappuzha, SVGVHSS, Kidanganoor, Pathanamthitta, St. Mary's Girls HS, Athirampuzha, Kottayam, St. Antony's HS, Vandanmedu, Idukki, Government Boys VHSS, Thripunithura, Ernakulam, KAVHS, Vellanikkara, Thrissur, PKHS Mannapra, Palakkad, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pukot, Wayanad, Govt. HSS, Karuvarakundu, Malappuram, Government Welfare HSS, Cherukunnu, Kannur and Government UPS Pullur, Kasaragod.

C.T.S. Nair, Executive Vice President, KSCSTE distributed the awards. K.G. Nair, Director, Centre for Science in Society, CUSAT presided. T. Radhakrishna, Director in-charge, Centre for Earth Science Studies, Kamalakshan Kokkal, Joint Director, KSCSTE and P. Harinarayanan addressed the award function.
