നാട്ടു മരങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനം

വിദ്യാലയ പരിസരത്തെ നാട്ടു മരങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനം, നാടന്‍ മരങ്ങളുടെ വൈവിധ്യത്തെ കുറിച്ച് അറിവ് നല്‍കിയതോടൊപ്പം അന്യം നിന്ന് കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന (endangered) നാട്ടിനങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള ഉള്കണ്ടാജനകമായ അവസ്ഥയും ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തി. ഇപ്പോഴുള്ള മരങ്ങളെ എല്ലാവര്ക്കും തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ വേണ്ടി ഈ മരങ്ങളുടെ നാട്ടു പേരും ശാസ്ത്രീയ നാമവും രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ ഫലകം സ്ഥാപിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. സ്കൂള്‍ പറമ്പില്‍ ഇപ്പോഴില്ലാത്ത എന്നാല്‍ നാട്ടില്‍ സുലബമായിരുന്ന ചില മരങ്ങളായ ഇരൂള്‍, വീട്ടി, കാഞ്ഞിരം തുടങ്ങിയവ കൂടി വെച്ച് പിടിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു. വാകയുടെ വിവിധ ഇനങ്ങള്‍ അടുത്ത കാലത്ത് വെച്ച് പിടിപ്പിച്ചതില്‍ ഉള്‍പ്പെടുമ്പോള്‍ നാട്ടു മാവിന്റെയോ പ്ലാവുകളുടെയോ ഒരിനം പോലും സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ പദ്ധതികളില്‍ നിന്നും ലഭ്യമല്ലാത്തതിനാല്‍ അടുത്ത വര്‍ഷത്തിലീക് നാടന്‍ ഇനങ്ങളുടെ ഒരു നഴ്സറി ഉണ്ടാക്കാനും അതിന്റെ പ്രജനനം വര്‍ധിപ്പിക്കാനും ഞാങ്ങലലാവുനത് ചെയ്യാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചു. മാതൃഭൂമി സീഡ് പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഭാഗമായി നാഷണല്‍ കൌണ്‍സില്‍ ഫോര്‍ ബയോലജികല്‍ സയന്‍സ് സങ്ങടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന നാട്ടു മരങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനത്തില്‍ ഞങ്ങളും പങ്ങാളികലാണ്

ഞങ്ങളുടെ വിദ്യാലയത്തിലെ ഔഷധ സസ്യങ്ങള്‍

2009-10 വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ജൈവവൈവിദ്യ രജിസ്റ്ററില്‍ ഔഷധ സസ്യങ്ങളുടെ ശാസ്ത്രീയനാമങ്ങള്‍,ചിത്രം, ഉപയോഗങ്ങള്‍ എന്നിവ ഉള്പെടുത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഇതില്‍ ചിലതെങ്ങിലും വികസനത്തിന്റെ ഫലമായി നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ടിടുന്ടെന്നു സമ്മതിക്കുന്നു. അത്തരത്തില്ലുള്ളത് വീണ്ടും വളര്‍ത്താന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.

വിദ്യാലയത്തിലെ ഔഷധ സസ്യങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനത്തില്‍ നിന്നും(Bio Diversity Register-Herbs)ഉള്ളതിനെ കണ്ടെതുന്നതോടൊപ്പം ഉണ്ടാവെണ്ടാതിനെ കൂടി കണ്ടെത്താനും അവയുടെ സാന്നിധ്യം വിദ്യാലയത്തില്‍ ഉറപ്പു വരുത്താനും കഴിഞ്ഞു. അത് കൂടുതല്‍ എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ മറ്റുള്ളവരുമായി പന്ഘു വെക്കാന്നുള്ള ഉധ്യമത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ് ഔഷധോധ്യാനം. ക്ലബ്ബങ്ങളായ ഇംഗ്ലീഷ് മീഡിയം വിദ്യാര്‍ഥികള്‍ മുന്‍കയ്യെടുത്തത് നിര്മിച്ചതിനാല്‍ പുസ്തകം ഇന്ഗ്ലീഷിലാണ്, മലയാളത്തിലാക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തിലാണ്.

മാതൃഭൂമി ദിനപത്രം സീഡ് പദ്ധതിയുടെ ഭാഗമായി അധ്യാപകര്‍ക്കായി നടത്തിയ ലേഖന മത്സരത്തില്‍ ഈ വിദ്യാലയത്തിലെ അധ്യാപകനായ പ്രസാദിന് വണ്ടൂര്‍ വിദ്യാഭ്യാസ ജില്ലയില്‍ മൂന്നാം സ്ഥാനം ലഭിച്ചു.ആയിരം രൂപയും പ്രശസ്തിപത്രവും ആണ് ഇതിന്റെ ബഘമായി ലഭിച്ചത്.

വയനാട് പഠന ക്യാമ്പ്‌

നവംബര്‍ 15, 16 തീയതികളിലായി വയനാട് വന്യ ജീവി സങ്കേതത്തിലെ തോല്പെട്ട്യില്‍ വെച്ച് പരിസ്ഥിതി പഠന ക്യാമ്പ്‌ നടത്തുന്നു. 

ക്ലബ്ബില്‍ അംഗങ്ങള്‍ക്കായി ഫീല്‍ഡ് സന്ദര്‍ശനവും പഠന ക്ലാസ്സുകളും ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കും. വയനാട്ടിലേക്ക് പോകുന്ന വഴി പൂകോട്ടു തടാകം, ബാണാസുര സാഗര്‍ അണകെട്ട്, മാനതവാടി പഴശ്ശി സ്മാരകം എന്നിവ കുടി കാണാന്‍ ഉദ്ദേശിക്കുന്നു.

8.ഡി ക്ലാസ്സില്‍ പഠിക്കുന്ന മിഥുന്‍ ആണ് ഒന്നാം സ്ഥാനം കരസ്ഥമാക്കിയത്. രണ്ടാം സ്ഥാനം ഒമ്പതാം ക്ലാസ്സിലെ ജമ്ഷിയയും, ആറാം ക്ലാസ്സിലെ അര്‍ജുനും പങ്കിട്ടു.

Reality Show

Our School is participating in the reality show ' Haritha Vidyalayam' .
The educational achievements, creativity and innovations of government and aided schools will be analyzed and evaluated in the educational reality show modeled on the Green Kerala Express. The evaluation will be done on the basis of the achievements of schools in the field of infrastructure, academic practices; IT based education, social indulgence, environment, cleanliness etc. 

The show will be aired in the terrestrial and satellite channel of Doordarshan and also in Victers channel from Nov to Dec in 75 episodes. This show will be jointly coordinated by IT@School, SSA, SIET. C-DIT will be the Total Solution provider. 

The best school will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 15 lakhs while the schools coming 2nd and 3rd in the show will be given Rs 10 lakhs and Rs 5 lakhs respectively. Schools attaining 4th to 10th place will be given Rs 2.0 lakh each and schools attaining 11 to 114 will be given an amount of Rs 10000.

3rd Ecological Congress

3rd Ecological Congress
 One of the mandates of the Biodiversity Board is to create awareness on the need for conserving biodiversity among different sections of the society, including students and teachers of the schools and colleges, secretariat staff, bureaucrats, legislatives, judiciary, media and general public. Biodiversity Board is involving educational institutions actively in various programmes related to biodiversity conservation.  The theme for the Third Children’s Ecological Congress would be “Biodiversity is life… Biodiversity is our life”, which is also the theme proposed for International Year of Biodiversity (IYB) 2010. Competitions State level competitions will be held on the following items.
 Water Colour Painting
 Essay Writing
 Quiz
 Oral Presentation (Based on the activities of the school carried out on Biodiversity Conservation during the last / current academic year).
Competitions on the above themes shall be conducted at school level, and those who secure First place in each item alone shall be eligible for participating at the State level competition. Duly filled up entry forms attached shall reach on or before 20 November 2010. The State level competitions will be held at Museum Auditorium, Museum Compound, Thiruvananthapuram on 29 and 30 November 2010. The school which scores maximum points will get the Rolling Trophy for the year 2010. Applications are invited from eligible schools

KSCSTE institutes awards for eco clubs

Thiruvananthapuram: As many as 42 schools across the State will compete for the district and State-level awards instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) for the best eco clubs under the National Green Corps programme.

The 42 schools, three from each district, were shortlisted by the District Implementation and Monitoring Committee (DIMC) chaired by the District Collector. The schools will be invited to make a presentation on their activities at a workshop to be held at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) here on August 5 and 6. An evaluation committee has been set up for the purpose.

The best eco club in each district will get a cash prize of Rs.50,000, while the State-level award carries a purse of Rs.1 lakh. Each school participating in the competition will have two students and one teacher.

Forest Minister Benoy Viswom is expected to distribute the awards at the workshop. The National Green Corps is an environment education programme launched by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.

In Kerala, as many as 2,00,000 students from 3,460 schools are members of eco clubs. Each eco club consists of more than 50 students and a teacher in-charge.

The KSCSTE provides an assistance of Rs.2,500 for each school.

Call to conserve natural resources

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) executive vice-president C.T.S. Nair has urged students to adopt corrective measures to prevent exploitation of natural resources.

He was inaugurating a State-level workshop for selection of best National Green Corps (NGC) school at the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) here on Thursday.

R.V.G. Menon presided over the inaugural session. CESS director-in-charge T. Radhakrishnan, National Green Corps Thiruvananthapuram district coordinator K.G. Ajit Kumar, State Nodal Officer, National Green Corps, Kamalakshan Kokkal and KSCSTE scientific officer P. Harinarayanan spoke.

As many as 150 participants, including teachers, students and NGC district coordinators, from select schools in 14 districts in the State are taking part in the two-day workshop. The district-level and State-level winners for the premier prizes instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment will be decided in the workshop. The awards will be declared at the valedictory session to be held on Friday.

School gets award for best eco-club

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ramakrishna Mission School, Kozhikode, has won the award instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment for the best performing eco-club in the State. The award was presented at a two-day State-level workshop on National Green Corps which concluded here on Friday. The award comprises a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh and a certificate.

The activities were taken up by students in the 2009-10 academic year.

The district-level awards carrying a purse of Rs.50,000 each went to Government UPS, Ayilam, Thiruvananthapuram, Jawahar Navodaya, Kottarakkara , Kollam, St. Joseph's HSS for Girls, Alappuzha, SVGVHSS, Kidanganoor, Pathanamthitta, St. Mary's Girls HS, Athirampuzha, Kottayam, St. Antony's HS, Vandanmedu, Idukki, Government Boys VHSS, Thripunithura, Ernakulam, KAVHS, Vellanikkara, Thrissur, PKHS Mannapra, Palakkad, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Pukot, Wayanad, Govt. HSS, Karuvarakundu, Malappuram, Government Welfare HSS, Cherukunnu, Kannur and Government UPS Pullur, Kasaragod.

C.T.S. Nair, Executive Vice President, KSCSTE distributed the awards. K.G. Nair, Director, Centre for Science in Society, CUSAT presided. T. Beware of dangers of CFL Bulbs

Potentially poisonous

Mercury is key to making compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) efficient. Electricity sent through the lamp, which contains mercury vapor and an inert gas such as argon, zaps the mercury, setting off a reaction that creates light.

The reaction is more efficient at converting power into light, with less residual heat than a normal incandescent bulb.

Each CFL contains about 5 milligrams of mercury, just enough to cover the tip of a ballpoint pen. By contrast, a mercury thermometer contains 500 milligrams of mercury.

The silvery substance can be dangerous even in small quantities, though, because it can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin, and it damages the central nervous system.

Small amounts can also build up in the environment if the bulbs are thrown in the garbage and break or are incinerated.

Mercury can enter the food chain and accumulate, for example, when big fish eat smaller fish that contain mercury, as is already the case with tuna and other large fish.

CFLs emit EMF radiation, EMF radiation has been linked to cancer, neurological disorders, and it plays havoc with diabetics. It's almost like living in a microwave with a living space full of CFLs.

Ron Hui, a Hong Kong professor, chairman of the electronic engineering department and co-author of a recent peer reviewed publication on the environmental impact of CFLs, tells us that each bulb contains “3-5 milligrams of mercury. The safe intake of mercury for a human body is a few micrograms. One milligram is 1,000 micrograms.” However, other studies report that CFL bulbs may contain as much as 30 milligrams of mercury and estimate that they are releasing about two to four tons of mercury into our air each year.

Hui points out that no one wants to talk about the issue that the circuit board of the bulbs, which is where the mercury is implanted, can’t be recycled and there is nowhere for the toxins to go but our air and soil and we are creating a ticking time for our future generations.

 Physicians report they are seeing an increase in migraines, headaches and severe skin rashes caused by compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Guidelines for Cleaning Up Broken CFL Bulbs

Suggestions will vary depending on the source, but here are the most common.

§  remove children, pregnant women and pets immediately
(they should not participate in or be present during the clean up process)

§  ventilate the area well

§  open a window and leave the room for at least 15 minutes

§  wear gloves, a mask and safety glasses

§  do not use a sweeper or a broom to clean it up

§  do not turn on your heating or air conditioning system

§  pick up big pieces with your fingers

§  use sticky tape to get small pieces

§  wipe the area with a wet rag

§  place all broken materials collected as well as all materials used in the clean up process in a second sealed plastic bag (air tight) or a screw-top glass jar and remove them from the house.

§  throw everything away that was used in the clean up process, including the rag and gloves.

§  if the break occurs on a carpet, cut that piece of that carpet out and throw it away.

§  wash your hands immediately

§  call your local recycling center to see if they collect CFL bulbs, otherwise put it in the trash.

§  as a preventative measure, it is suggested that compact fluorescent light bulbs should never be used in areas where there is carpeting or in sockets where a breakage is more likely to occur.

Why LED's?

Because LEDs are solid state, they don't break when dropped. LED bulbs contain no mercury and they are about as efficient as CFLs. LEDs can be recycled easily, and the materials re-used. And most important, they have the potential to become even more efficient and less expensive as LED technology improves.

Campaign against Forest fire

Vazhuthana Pooram- meet against Bt.Brinjal

In a significant move against Bt.Brinjal, NGC malappuram unit organised 'Vazhuthana Pooram' at Kottakkal Raja's High school.  It was inaugurated by Minister for Agriculture Mr.Mullakara Ratnakaran.  An exhibition of various varieties of Brinjals were also arranged.  Nearly 24 varieties were on display.  A Book exhibition & sale by Alter Media Publications helped the persons present there to purchase books related with agriculture & environment.  A talk by a local agriculturist was very much interesting and insight giving.  Dr.Usha of Thanal, Thiruvananthapuram spoke on the occassion.

BALA PARISTHITHI CONGRESS-2010 (WETLANDS & MAN)

            District level BALA PARISTHITHI CONGRESS-2010 was held in our school by VANASHREE Nature Club. Many schools in the district participated in the Congress. The Congress was inaugurated by Divisional Forest Officer(Nilambur South)S.Unnikrishnan.  He told that along with planting tree sapling it is the need of the hour to plant vegetables also in our gardens to have a healthy living.  ACF (Nilambur North) Ratheesh was also present in the occasion.  Panchayath President Sri.Hameed Haji Inaugurated the Photo exhibition.  More than 500 photos was displayed by various agencies like Silent Valley National Park, WWF, Agro Friends, CISSA(Centre for Innovation in Science & Social Action), Vanashree Nature Club, Forest Department etc.  

Painting, Quiz & Essay writing competitions were held for U.P, High School & Higher Secondary School.  Painting & essay writing were conducted on the theme ‘Wetlands & man’.  Quiz was conducted in two rounds, i.e. oral round & multimedia round. 

            Food was provided for the participating students.  After the lunch students of our club presented poems and songs related to environment.  Tony Thomas, Environmentalist inaugurated the session on Wetlands.  The various threats to environment and in particular to Wetlands were discussed in his multimedia presentation.  Various actions that can be initiated were discussed.  Rajendran, Parishad activist and environmentalist, asked the students to start firm & specific movements to protect the wetlands.  He spoke of such a movement to protect the ‘Kotta Puzha’, in the nearby Chokkad. Dr.Balakrishnan, showed a short film on Wetlands from BBC’s Nature first series.  The show was so magnificent that the students almost forget about the time. 

The closing session was inaugurated by Wandoor M.L.A. Sri.A.P.Anil kumar.  He told the students the developments going on worldwide to protect the environment.  As future citizens it is their duty to fight for it.   He presented the certificates and present to the winners of the respective competitions.   ACF(Social Forestry) Malappuram Sri.Jaya Prakash told that they are ready to provide help if the school is willing to start Herbal Garden in the school.  Starting a Eco Library, help can’t be provided for the moment, but surely they will discuss it with higher officials and will surely do what can be done by them.  Panchayath President Hameed Haji, Head Master E.Bhaskaran, Principal Abdul Razaq, PTA President Hamzakutty, were actively present on the occasion.A.Vinod  welcome the guests and the vote of thanks was done by S.Prasad.  

Sri.Suneesh & Sri.Sunil.P were quiz masters.  Sri.V.C.Mohandas was the technical co-ordinator. Sri. Sivasankaran received the guests.  Scouts and Guides did a commendable job in receiving guests, serving food, & in the exhibition hall.   

1 st State Bala Krishi Sashtra Congress 2010

3 Students from our school attended the 1 st State Bala Krishi Sashtra Congress 2010 held at Central Library, Trivandrum on 22 & 23 January 2010. we presented the fate of rice at karuvarakundu. the area under cultivation reduced drastically that it is near zero level. the ground water level also went low, lot of vegetables had to be imported, caused unemployment. the remedies lie in the farming area itself, alternate areas had to be explored. Rashid from +1 was the student who presented this to the audience. we also presented the method of farming mushroom in the school. Noorul Ameen(7 std) presented the various stages of cultivating this and also about the economy in doing this agriculture. he did this in an energetically manner. Anto Thomas(8 std) presented the posters related to agriculture.

PARAMBIKULAM CAMP

25 students of our club participated in the Parmbikulam Nature camp on 23 & 24 of December. it was a New year gift to us. We got lot of opportunity to see the wild life in the sanctuary. we also had the opportunity to see the controversial Parambikulam & Thoonakadavu Reservoirs. In this picture you can see us posing in front of the famous Kannimara Teak, which is believed to be the biggest natural teak in the world. The staff of the park requires special mention, we feel heart felt thanks to them for the kind co-operation provided to us. We got lot of information from the field staff, the quiz competition held there also gave us opportunity to conclude the trip.  

Dr.Sathish Chandran speaks to students

Dr.Sathish Chandran, Dr.S.Shanthi( Environmentalists) & S.Shivadas, (Silent Valley DFO) Visited our school on 15^th of December, 2009.  They had an interesting interaction with the students.  Sathish told that he feel much sorry about the present state of Karuvarakundu.  When he visited this place 30 yrs back, it was so rich in diversity and agriculture.  But today all lost in the flow of time.  The hot air blowing from down the valley dries up the forest up the hills.  So we have to plant more trees, so that the air will be cooler, which will result in more showers.  He talked about various aspects of nature protection.  He also asked us to start a Eco-Library, which will help to quench our thirst for knowledge.
